Traditional Territory Acknowledgement

The Sooke Teachers’ Association acknowledges and respects the privilege to work and learn on the unceded shared traditional territories of the Coast Salish; specifically the W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich) Peoples of MÁLEXEȽ (Malahat), and the lək̓ʷəŋən speaking people, known today as the Xwsepsum and Songhees Nations, on which our office is built. We recognize and walk softly in consideration of an important and finely balanced relationship with the seasons, the lands, and the tides that have sustained the original people of these lands. Members of the Sooke Teachers’ Association serve four surrounding Nations, including SC’IȺNEW̱ Nation, T’SOU-KE Nation, Nuu-chah-nulth Pacheedaht First Nation to the west and the Métis Nation of Greater Victoria. We give thanks to the ancestors, leaders, Elders and youth for their stewardship of these lands since time immemorial and generously sharing the cultural teachings of this beautiful place. The Sooke Teachers’ Association recognizes that decolonization is the work of settlers and, as such, commits to offering its members opportunities to continue their individual and combined journeys of reconciliation through professional development on the land and alongside the Nations communities. We continue to advocate for ongoing anti-racist practices, equity, inclusion, decolonization and responding to the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action, as they pertain to our role as teachers.
