Traditional Territory Acknowledgement

The Sooke Teachers’ Association acknowledges and expresses gratitude to the Lkwungen People, also known as the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, for providing us with the opportunity to work and learn on their unceded traditional territories. Lkwungen means “Place to smoke herring”, Lkwung means “to smoke herring” and Lkwungen’athun refers to the language of the land. We give thanks to the ancestors, leaders, Elders and youth for caretaking these lands since time immemorial and generously sharing the cultural teachings of this beautiful place. Members of the Sooke Teachers’ Association serve four Nations, including Beecher Bay Sc’ianew Nation, T’Sou-ke Nation, Nuu-chah-nulth Pacheedaht Nation and the Métis Nation of Greater Victoria. We recognize the valuable teachings these communities offer as we learn and grow together.

The Sooke Teachers’ Association recognizes that decolonization is the work of settlers and, as such, commits to offering Pro-D opportunities so that members can continue to learn from the land and with the communities with whom we work. The STA advocates for ongoing anti-racist practices, equity, inclusion and decolonization. The STA commits to responding to the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action, as they pertain to our role as teachers. We are active and consistent partners in Reconciliation.
